RDRAM: A Look at Rambus DRAM Technology
RDRAM, or Rambus Dynamic Random-Access Memory, emerged in the late 1990s as a high-speed memory solution designed to compete with traditional SDRAM. Developed by Rambus Inc., RDRAM promised faster data transfer rates by using a narrow, high-frequency bus, which allowed it to achieve bandwidths beyond what conventional memory could handle.
Unlike standard SDRAM, RDRAM used a serial data interface rather than a parallel one. This design reduced latency for some operations and supported higher clock speeds. However, the architecture required specialized memory controllers, which increased costs and complexity for computer manufacturers.
